Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Sanger, Texas

Total Budget: $20,578

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: General

Summary: Hoop houses, raised garden beds, and equipment for shared garden to supply food to needy individuals in Denton and Cooke Counties

The THRIVE program was created to address the behavioral and mental health needs of students in underserved, high-needs areas. The only grocery store in Sanger, TX closed recently and the program provides students with access to resilience skill-building curricula and an on-campus grocery store, run by students, which offers healthy food and hygiene items. The program has since expanded to four other schools in North Texas, with three more in development.

This project supports the THRIVE program by contributing to building out the garden at Community Strong Farms, which supplies produce to the THRIVE grocery stores. The project would provide two hoop houses and a rain catchment system to improve food production. New raised beds, including an ADA-accessible bed, will also allow agricultural techniques to be taught by Master Gardeners from Denton County Master Gardener Association. The projected costs for this project is $27,000. Volunteers from Denton County Rotary Clubs will assist with building the beds and constructing the hoop houses and installing the rain catchment system.
