Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Iowa Park

Total Budget: $4,100

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: Improving Rotary Park by building a baseball field

Iowa Park features numerous parks throughout its community, but most are concentrated on the north side of town. The south side, by contrast, has only two parks. When the Iowa Park Club was established, the city of Iowa Park granted the club permission to develop a parcel of land on the south side, just a few blocks from an elementary school, into a public park where children could play. This park was named Rotary Park. Over the years, the club and others have made various improvements, but these have been scattered across many years. Recently, no modifications have been made. In cooperation with the city of Iowa Park, the club is now committed to enhancing the park, with the understanding that this will be a multi-year project.

For the 2024-2025 Rotary year, the club is partnering with the city of Iowa Park to build a baseball field for younger children to practice on. Currently, there is a shortage of baseball fields in the city where teams can practice. The ultimate goal is to develop the field so that games can be played there.

The project will involve refurbishing the existing backstop, bringing in new dirt, purchasing and installing bases and a home plate, and constructing a pitcher's mound on the field, along with one or two additional mounds for practice and warm-up.

This project will benefit the area's children by providing a place to practice and play pick-up games. It will also support the baseball associations in Iowa Park by offering additional practice space and enhancing the overall appearance of the park and surrounding area.

Timeline: The project will start after Thanksgiving and be completed before the start of baseball season around March 15, 2025.

The club members will raise the club's financial responsibility through its flag program. Club members will also put in some sweat equity when possible. The city of Iowa Park will provide most of the labor to meet various codes.
