Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind in Gooding currently has a concession stand located in a recreation complex including a track, baseball and soccer fields. These grant funds will be used to add a small patio with customer seating.
The blind/visually impaired students at the school operate the concession stand during school hours. They gain real-world life skills such as customer service, money handling, food safety and teamwork which helps them prepare for entry into the workforce. Blind students require explicit hands-on teaching to master everyday vocational and social tasks. This concession stand offers an ideal opportunity for that.
Rotary members (3-4) will be involved with the actual installation of the cement pad. Then once the construction is completed, club members will work in the stand with the students during a track meet to improve our knowledge of what challenges these student have in life.
Construction will be done in the fall of 2025.
There is a short-term goal to begin renting out the concession stand during the summer months to community groups wanting to raise funds for their programs. The rental funds will be used for further enhancements to the stand with the dream being to open a breakfast drive-thru to give students even more opportunities for training.
