Describe the project objectives:
Repairs to the Centro Educativo Santos Juan Moncada school are needed to allow students to continue into grades 9 and 10. This project will help meet the educational needs for an increasing number of students in a growing rural area within the Lancetilla Botanical Gardens near Tela, Honduras. Students here often stop their formal education in elementary (grade 5) or middle (grade 8). This modest renovation will allow students to continue into high school and prepare for higher education. This project will commence upon receipt of grant funds in fall 2025 and should be completed in approximately six months by May 2026.
Describe the benefit to the community and/or improve lives:
This project will primarily support the area of focus of Rotary International of Basic Education. In recent years, the Craig Rotary Club, Greeley After-Hours Club, and the Greeley Centennial Rotary Club have partnered on multiple educational projects near Tela, Honduras. The community is active in the needs assessment, development, construction, and implementation of these projects, which have included basic sanitation, electricity, roofing, furniture, uniforms, internet access, and flood mitigation. Based on the belief that education is the path to a better life, finishing existing open space to be accessible to two additional grades of students will continue to improves the lives of the Lancetilla Botanical Gardens community for generations to come. Parents and the Honduras Department of Education have requested help in finishing these learning spaces.
Sustainability:
The Honduran Department of Education and the parents and community members have a vested interest in their children's education. The materials and labor will all be locally sourced, and the cost to finish two classrooms is relatively minimal. Local families will provide the labor for window and ceiling installation. Hotel-style in-wall A/C units will be installed by a local contractor and is included in the bid.
Active Rotarian Involvement:
The Greeley Centennial Rotary Club has been active in serving the Lancetilla Botanical Gardens for approximately 8 years. Prior service work has included the construction of two other modest buildings, the addition of electricity and or solar to four school sites, the purchase of uniforms and school furniture, the creation of a vocational sewing and technology center, and connecting the school to the internet, to name a few. We have partnered with the Craig Rotary Club and Greeley After Hours Club on many of these projects.
Members from our club have made two prior service trips to this rural area to help with the physical work and build relationships with our contacts with the community, as well as make contact with members of the Tela Rotary Club in 2017 and 2019.
Total Project Budget: $6,000
$6,000 from the Greeley Centennial Rotary and the 5440 District, consisting of $2,000 club dollars with matching funds of $4,000 from our district.
Publicity Plan:
Greeley Centennial Rotary will write an article as the project progresses updating both the club membership and District 5440. There are no travel plans to Honduras as part of this project. We will share project successes on our updated website as well as post to our club Facebook and X feeds.
