Summary: Packing nutritious shelf stable meals for a food pantry in/near San Diego, CA.
San Diego Hunger Coalition estimates that, as of March 2024, 1 in 4 (25%) San Diegans experience nutrition insecurity, or are unable to provide three, nutritious meals per day for themselves and/or their families. Our project will involve packing 10,000 nutritious shelf-stable meals for a local food pantry which will distribute the meals to people in need. We have partnered with the Outreach Program and Old Mission Rotary (OMR) to accomplish the project. The Outreach Program is a nonprofit dedicated to combating malnutrition that engages volunteers to pack shelf stable meals with 7-11 grams of plant-based protein that are fortified with 21 essential vitamins and minerals.
Our club will split the cost of the meals with OMR. The funds will be used to purchase the meal ingredients which cost $0.37 per meal (not including shipping). We have a goal of packing 10,000 meals and engaging 75+ volunteers during our meal packing day in January/February 2025. We will invite OMR's sponsored clubs Francis Parker Interact and Pacific Beach Rotaract and our sponsored club City Heights Rotaract to join us as volunteers.
