District 5340

2020-21

Rotary Club: North County San Diego-Route 78

Project Title: Hope for Mtshabezi Clinic

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Hope for Mtshabezi, a Non-Profit Organization that has been providing free health care to the medically under served people in South western part of Zimbabwe, has been granted permission by the Gwanda Rural Council and Gwanda Ministry of Health and Child care to build a clinic that will serve the population of the that area.

They have been actively building a clinic since 2014, and construction started in 2018, and is now finishing up. The last thing the clinic needed was electricity. Due to it's remote nature, it has to use solar panels to provide that electricity. This grant to Hope for Mtshabezi was to help finance the cost of the panels. These panels were provided and installed by a local contractor.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Hundreds, if not thousands

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The residents in the area have limited access to any medical care. This clinic was constructed to rectify that. The clinic will be staffed by medical professionals, serving the residents of the area on a full time basis.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? One

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Lindani Sibanda is the founder of Hope for Mtshabez, and an ex member of our club. Professionally she is a nurse. She has been working on this project for several years, and has held fundraisers, worked with local authorities for permit, and oversaw the construction of the clinic. She has recently moved back to Zimbabwe from the United States to support the clinic full time. She is now a current of member Bulawayo South Rotary Club in Zimbabwe. In this project's case, she got quotes and managed the purchase and installation of the needed solar panels and batteries.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?
