Rotary Club: North County San Diego-Route 78 Project Title: Hermanitas cohort materials 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? The North County chapter of MANA started a new cohort of Hermanitas (mentees) at Lincoln Middle School in Oceanside Unified. They had planned to also begin a new cohort of girls at Cesar Chavez Middle School, but the school wasn't able to get everything in place to begin by October 1, so they will start a cohort in the fall; the books and binders have already been purchased for them. The girls meet after school, so a portion of the funds were used to buy snacks for the girls (teens are always hungry after school and they listen and participate better when they have food in their stomach). The mentor Anais met with the cohort of girls once a week after school. Many of the purchases included snacks because teens are always hungry after school and they pay attention better when they have food in their stomachs. The Mentor found that she needed a printer because the didn't have access to print the weekly lessons at Lincoln and some lessons (such as Dia de los Muertos, Drugs, etc.) need to be printed in color. The materials that need to be printed on special paper were printed at CopyMax (because they give us a discount). So, we purchased a printer and toner for the mentor to use for the students. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 15 girls 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The beneficiaries were 7th grade Latina girls who had a 2.0 GPA or better and who submitted a signed application. As a result of participating in the Hermanitas Mentoring Program the girls now have a higher level of confidence and have been matched with a Latina who has been successful in their chosen career area and learned about their life and why we chose them as a role model. They have also learned about how to choose a university and how to get accepted. They also leaarned how to read labels to identify sugars in drinks and prevent diabetes. Diabetes is a serious health issue in the Hispanic community and the cases rise every year. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 1 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. I (Corie) assisted Gabriela Hooshmand in ordering the materials and I trained the new mentor Anais in the Hermanitas curriculum in person on two occasions. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? MANA de North County negotiated with Oceanside Unified to start the new program at Lincoln M.S. and they, in cooperation with the school counselor, recruited the girls to participate in the program and they worked with the new cohort of girls every week after school. Gabriela (MANA Board member & OUSD staff) supervised Anais at the beginning and then she didn't need any more onsite supervision because they met often. 7. Income
