Community meeting, review of documents and regulations, and two community visits were conducted with the Community Development Council, the Water Commission (including plumbers), the Health and Electricity Commission, the Parents' Education Council, and key leaders, including former deputy mayors.
The community of Pajoca Sector 2 currently has two drinking water systems that have collapsed since they were established for 20 years. Currently, they are experiencing difficulties obtaining the vital liquid due to the low flow rate from the springs of the currently active system. Therefore, the community and the committee have organized to manage the project's implementation. They have undertaken the task of acquiring six sources that produce a flow of 2.25 liters per second, which is sufficient for 266 families, with a daily supply of 80 liters per inhabitant.
According to the visit to the community, it can be determined that basic sanitation systems exist, 40% of families have a formal washable latrine and 60% have a traditional latrine with a shed, toilet, and iron, work done with their own resources, however, in relation to latrine maintenance there is neglect in terms of proper management of papers and the correct use of the sanitary tax, which is causing infectious centers that can be the cause of diseases especially in children.
According to studies conducted during visits to the community of Pajoca, Sector 2, in the municipality of Nahualá, in the department of Sololá, a gravity-fed drinking water supply project is being proposed. To this end, they have six community-owned sources located at a distance of two water supply lines, due to the location of the springs, with a total of 4,700 meters from the spring to the distribution tank. The distribution lines would consist of two lines, branches, and sub-branches, each with a length of 2,850 meters. The design has taken all homes into consideration, ensuring that water service is not concentrated in a single group of homes, ensuring equitable distribution.
This project will benefit 100% of the population. The project will benefit 266 families, approximately 931 people, according to the design guidelines.El Comité de Agua cuenta con Administrative tools that will strengthen water management and conservation in the community of Pajoca, Sector 2 Nahualá, Sololá. Members of the Mazatenango Rotary Club are supporting them in their search for the requested funding to carry out this project.
