Rotary Vijana Poa WASH Initiative

Empowering Youth for Water Source Repair & Maintenance in Uganda

Under the Guidance of WASH-RAG

Background

Many rural communities in Uganda suffer from broken or poorly maintained water sources, particularly boreholes and shallow wells. Meanwhile, youth unemployment remains high. The Vijana Poa WASH Initiative addresses both issues by training youth to repair and maintain water sources in their communities while promoting hygiene and sanitation practices under the WASH-RAG system.

Goal

To restore and maintain community water sources through youth-led interventions, while building youth capacity for sustainable employment in the WASH sector.

Objectives

Train youth to repair and maintain existing boreholes and water points.

Provide toolkits and business skills to support youth-led WASH enterprises.

Promote sanitation and hygiene through community-based youth outreach.

Create sustainable youth maintenance teams embedded in local communities.

To locate and map all village natural water sources used by communities.

Key Activities

Youth Technical Training in borehole repair, handpump mechanics, and water point maintenance.

Provision of Toolkits and technical manuals for field use.

WASH Business Workshops to support youth-led enterprises.

Youth-Led Hygiene Campaigns in communities and schools.

Deployment of Youth WASH Teams to repair and monitor water points.

Set up and Train Village Water Committees for local water point governance and sustainability.
